The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time...?

In the interest of broadening my knowledge of music, I happened upon this list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, according to Rolling Stone magazine. I thought I'd have you gentlemen weigh in on this list:

  1. This seems much more like a list of popular classic rock songs than anything else. What are the qualifications for 'greatest?' I'm quite skeptical of this list.

  2. Nice list.

Jacob- though it's certainly debatable, I think what they mean by "greatest" in this 500 is probably a combination of most popular and most influential. Though that definitely leaves it open to bias, I think that it's pretty safe to say that a lot of what we might consider "classic rock" preceded and paved the way for other genres.

I thought the spread here was pretty good, however: rock, folk, blues, soul, motown, rap, etc. The title "...of All Time" might be a stretch though. Classic orchestral and operatic work isn't really represented, as well as jazz, and I think it would be difficult to say that we would have many of the songs on this list without their influence.

  4. Since the list was compiled by "Rolling Stone", it just comes with the territory. I've made it through about 20.
